That’s 11.1 million children in the United States that go to child care! If you’re one of those families, how can you be sure your child is getting high quality care? Keep reading! Start your search early. Don’t make a rushed decision! Being aware that there is a shortage of high quality child care is important in preparing you for the search. Take your time, be persistent, and stay optimistic. Quality care is worth the effort!
Know your options. Care programs include licensed centers, licensed in-home programs, and unlicensed in-home care. Depending on your needs, you may want one type of program over another. Having options available gives you the ability to make the best choice for your family.
Compare your choices! In-home or center providers all have varying hours, fees, and openings. Check on at least two, if not more! You will want to inquire with several programs so you can narrow down to the greatest fit.
Visit providers in person. Tour multiple programs. Come with lots of questions to ask that are important to you. Don’t forget to request, and follow up with, their references.
Take time to decide! Sleep on it and think it over. This isn’t a decision you want to jump into quickly. Even if you’re in a time crunch, allow yourself to reflect before committing.
Get it in writing. A written contract protects both you and the provider. You should be given a copy of their policies such as vacations or sickness, payment deadlines, emergencies, meals, etc.
Stay involved. Even after you make your choice, you shouldn’t stop there! Communicate regularly with your caregiver. Build a great relationship, because they’re taking care of your most precious person!
