Ohio Kindergarten Age Requirements
Starting with the 2026–2027 school year, Ohio has new rules for when children are eligible to start kindergarten or first grade. The changes took effect March 20, 2026.
A child must be 5 years old to start kindergarten, or 6 years old to start first grade.
Eligibility is based on your child's age on the first day of instruction at their school district — not on a fixed statewide cutoff date.
Families can choose to enroll an age-eligible 5-year-old in kindergarten, or wait until the child turns 6 (Ohio's compulsory school age).

Early Learning Partnership Services
Child Care Choices serves as a bridge between families, students, schools, and child care programs. Strong partnerships are fostered to ensure opportunities and resources are available to encourage a smooth entry into kindergarten academically, socially, emotionally, and developmentally. Our Program Coordinator who oversees this initiative works closely with families and care providers of preschool-age children in this capacity.
