Story Lady Visits

The Child Care Choices Story Lady Program has had the privilege of giving the gift of reading to our youngest citizens in the Miami Valley for over 20 years.  Our Story Ladies visit child care centers, preschools, and family child care homes to read books to children and engage them in early literacy activities.

Story Lady Books

The Child Care Choices Story Lady Program gives children greater access to age-appropriate books, as the Story Ladies personally hand each child a book to take home to share with his/her family.  We place a book plate inside the books with tips for parents/caregivers on enjoying the shared reading experience and suggested activities to extend the learning and to make the concepts in the book more tangible.

Story Lady Family Outcomes

Approximately 32.4 million American children go without books in their homes. Studies show that access to print resources during early childhood development has an immediate and long-term effect on vocabulary, background knowledge, and comprehension. Our Story Lady families appreciate and value the books they receive, and tell us through the survey that is sent home (from Spring 2019 Story Lady Parent Survey):

  •  Great program! My child loves the Story Lady!

  • [The Story Lady is] helpful to the kids. The books are age appropriate. Kids can relate to it easily and read as bedtime stories every day. Thank you very much.

Story Lady Provider Outcomes

Each provider also receives a book to add to the classroom library and to read to the children while they are in her care.  These books, as well as the enrichment activities that were done during the Story Lady visit, will become part of the provider’s toolkit and can be used with future groups of children, thus increasing the impact of the program. Following are some comments from providers (from Winter 2019 and Spring 2019 Educator Survey):

  • We really enjoy the Story Lady visiting. She does a nice job interacting with the children & it seems like I am always learning something as well.

  • Yes-the kids LOVE her visits and she shows us brand new activities!
