School-Age Milestones

As your child becomes a school-ager, it starts a new adventure of milestones! You might be asking yourself how your little baby has gotten so old so fast. We’ll break down the ways your child will continue to develop (hopefully not as fast as it has seemed so far). It’s important to remember that every child reaches milestones differently, and that’s ok! Your school-ager is uniquely themselves and has their own timeline for progress.

Social/Emotional Milestones

School-agers’ social and emotional milestones will be more pronounced as they approach and enter puberty. A few social/emotional accomplishments to keep an eye out for are:

  • they seek increased independence,

  • they strengthen friendships with their peers,

  • they identify more complex emotions as they experience them.

Cognitive Milestones

As school-agers, they are now achieving cognitive milestones that can be identified as math and science concepts. Here are a few things to keep an eye on to track their cognitive development:

  • they complete complex puzzles,

  • they solve more advanced calculations,

  • they can translate their 2D shape knowledge into 3D through discovering volume,

  • they test their hypotheses,

  • they develop a deeper comprehension of concepts beyond our planet into outer space.

Language and Literacy Milestones

Your school-ager’s language and literacy milestones become more complex. Keep an eye out for these ways it could manifest:

  • they read increasingly difficult texts independently,

  • they add complex words to their ever-evolving vocabulary,

  • they develop their storytelling chops.

Fine Motor and Gross Motor Milestones

They have continued development toward motor milestones in more specific ways. These are some of the ways it could present, so keep an eye out for:

  • they learn to ride a bike,

  • they are able to tie their shoelaces,

  • they may become more awkward when going through puberty,

  • they have improved reflexes.
